UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

A Bachelor of Fine Arts is a standard undergraduate degree for students pursuing a professional education in the visual, fine or performing arts.  

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree differs from a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in that most of the program consists of a practical studio component, as contrasted with lecture and discussion classes.   

Although a Bachelor of Fine Arts is traditionally considered a four-year degree, a BFA program may take shorter or longer to complete because of the amount of studio course work required. After completing this degree, the learner may acquire a postgraduate degree; Master of Fine Arts or Master of Arts. 

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree tracks in theatre or dance gives students access to one-on-one faculty training and mentorship, guidance from top-notch professional artists and guest lecturers, as well as the ability to gain practical hands-on experience in an intimate and collaborative environment. The School of Theatre & Dance is proud to offer six specialized Bachelor of Fine Arts programs in Acting, Dance, Playwriting & Dramaturgy, Production & Design, Stage Management, and Theatre Education.

The Houston community is a rich environment in which to study theatre. This lively entertainment zone hosts nine theater venues across 17 downtown blocks. The district, with nearly 13,000 seats for live performances, ranks second in the United States for the number of theater seats in a concentrated downtown area, and is one of only five cities with permanent professional resident companies in all the major performing arts disciplines. Students of UH have numerous opportunities for theatre experiences in the city of Houston.
