2 UHCOP Teams to Present Action Plans in Response to Medication Diversion Incident April 12 at TSHP Annual Seminar in Frisco

April 8 — UH College of Pharmacy is being represented by two of the three finalist teams competiting in the 2019 Leadership Challenge April 12 during the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Seminar in Frisco, Texas.

The UHCOP finalist teams comprise Serenity Gracia, Chidi Iroegbu, Julina Joseph and Aimen Naveed; and Amilda Medina, Eileell Alin Nguyen and Van Nguyen.

Introduced in 2018, the TSHP Leadership Challenge competition is "designed to help students further explore their roles as leaders in the healthcare field." The competition case was released by TSHP in December 2018, and teams had to develop a 5-10 page action plan for responding to the case scenario, which involved the diversion of controlled substances over some time by a hospital healthcare staff member who overdosed on site.

The submitted action plans are expected to include defining and prioritizing the key problems, identifying specific personnel or units who need to be involved in the resolution, and presenting three strategies for preventing the problem from recurring. Teams also are expected to select one of their prospective strategies to implement and justify their choice.

The finalist teams were notified in late January to prepare for live presentation of their plan before a panel of judges with leadership and management experience.

The winning team will receive a $250 cash award and each member will receive a complementary registration to the organization's 2020 Annual Seminar.
