How do I sign up for the first teachHOUSTON course?

Students classified as sophomores or beyond may register for our first course - Introduction to STEM Teaching (CUIN 2300). To take any subsequent courses, you must be advised by the teachHOUSTON program Faculty Advisor, Dr. Karen McIntush. Email the Faculty Advisor at tHadvising@uh.edu for more information.

Does teachHOUSTON count as a substitute for a UH Minor?

• For Natural Science and Mathematics students teachHOUSTON counts as a capstone option.
• For Engineering and Technology students teachHOUSTON counts as a minor.

How many credit hours must students take to complete the teachHOUSTON program?

The program requires 15 hours of coursework plus 6 hours for student teaching, totaling 21 credit hours. Each course is three credit hours and can be taken one semester at a time or in a compressed sequence for students entering the program as juniors or seniors. See course sequence here.

What type of certification will I have when I complete the program?

Grades 7-12 math, composite science, life science, physical science, chemistry, or physics.

How is the teachHOUSTON Program different from traditional teacher-preparation programs?

You will gain hands-on teaching experience as early as your first semester.

How much time will I actually spend in classrooms?

You will begin teaching students your first semester in the program. By the time you reach your student teaching semester, you will have taught as many as 15-20 lessons at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
