Primarily a collaborative artist, pianist Brian Suits is an eclectic musician: at times he also wears the various hats of composer, conductor, and arranger. He is comfortable in a wide range of musical styles, and is a fluent improviser. Outside of his frequent stage appearances as collaborative artist and chamber musician, Suits has performed as piano soloist in concerti with the Jupiter Symphony and Sejong Soloists, among others. He recorded a set of 23 teaching CDs for Chung-Eum Music Publishers in Korea, including three dozen sonatas of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, the Bach Inventions, and the complete Czerny Etudes. He has written concerti for both piano and violin, a double concerto for violin and guitar, a string quartet, a program work for full orchestra, and manifold solo and chamber works and songs. His album of jazz-flavored solo piano works, “The Way Back,” was released in 2004 on musikdorf Records. Suits has conducted the French Chamber Orchestra Albéric Magnard, and has also conducted the Gonzaga Symphony, Project Divisi, and Nino Rota's “Italian Straw Hat” for the Moores School of Music Opera; as well as the Cheju Symphony, Prime Philharmonic, SangRok Symphony, Cadenza Chamber Orchestra and others in Korea. Suits has written and conducted orchestral arrangements for more than a dozen films in Korea, including “The Host” and “Mother,” both directed by Bong Joon-Ho. “The Host” was a hit at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, broke all box office records in Korea, and was a sleeper art house hit here in the states. The top two prizes for film music at the 2006 Korean Film Awards were awarded to “For Horowitz” and “The Host,” for both of which Suits made and conducted the orchestral arrangements. Suits taught accompanying and coached art song at the Yale School of Music from 1990-2002, and for many summers taught and played at the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Burlington, Vermont. He was also a guest artist at the Great Mountains Festival. He received his BM from UT Austin and his MM from USC, and his teachers have included David Renner, Brooks Smith, and Jean Barr. He also studied composition with Donald Grantham. He joined the faculty at the Moores School of Music in fall of 2006, where he is Visiting Professor of Accompanying and Chamber Music, as well as art song coach.
