Join the Honros College for this two-part learning away trip that will address two topics of interest.

  • Science in the American Democracy, a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of science and society in our nation’s capital. Led by Dr. Rita Sharp
  • 250 Years of the American Experiment, exploring the evolution of American democracy, identity, and ideals. Led by Dr. Carol Cooper

This trip, co-led by Drs. Rita Sharp and Carol Cooper, will lead students to visit Washington, D.C.'s renowned memorials and museums, tour the National Institutes of Health, Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, Arlington National Cemetery and many other landmarks. 

*Dr Rita Sharp's students must be currently enrolled in or have completed BIOL 3350 (Science Communication Strategies) for Science in the American Democracy.

* There is no enrollment necessary for 250 Years of the American Experiment with Dr. Carol Cooper.

  1. Students will need to have completed or be enrolled in BIOL 3350 (Science Communication Strategies) to travel as part of the Science in the American Democracy with Dr. Rita Sharp.
  2. No class enrollment is needed for 250 Years of the American Experiment with  Dr. Carol Cooper. 
No, students do not need a passport to travel throughout the U.S although they will need a valid state ID.
 Students will be staying in a hotel in the Washington, D.C. area. On previous trips, students have stayed at Hotel Madera near Dupont Circle. Students can expect to stay there or somewhere comparable, and students can expect to share a room.
 No, students can be of any major and don’t have to be members of the Honors College, as long as they have taken or are taking the required course. 
 This trip will be led by Dr. Rita Sharp and Dr.Carol Cooper.  
 Students will be able to pay their travel costs through PeopleSoft, similarly to how they pay their tuition. 
 Students will need to plan to bring enough money or a credit card to pay for their meals throughout the trip and any other incidentals or souvenirs they would like to purchase. 
 The cost of the trip includes flights, hotel room and breakfast, and metro fares.
