Model Debate Programs

Model Arab League (MAL)
Established in 1988, Model Arab League is the oldest and most prestigious Model Debate program at the University of Houston. Participants in the Model Arab League take on the role of diplomats within the Middle East and North African (MENA) region and collaborate to address some of today’s most pressing international issues. MAL participants commit to weekly practices in which they master parliamentary procedure, public speaking, critical thinking and research skills, and diplomacy.
The team has had an outstanding 2024-2025 year: At the Bilateral Chamber MAL conference in Houston in March 2025, the UH team earned the title of Southeast Regional Champions. They attended the Northeast Regional MAL conference in Boston for the first time in fall 2024, where the team received several Distinguished/Superior Delegate distinctions. “In the last year, we’ve doubled the number of active MAL debaters,” Head Delegates Salma Abbady and Alveena Imran say. “We’re looking forward to defending our title as Southeast Regional Champions next year.” The team will represent Palestine at the 2026 National University Model Arab League Conference in Washington DC.

American Mock World Health Organization, Inc. (AMWHO)
AMWHO is a simulation of the World Health Assembly. AMWHO conferences give students the chance to engage with real-world global health issues through policy-making and debate. Participating members represent different countries, NGOs, industries, or media organizations and work together to create resolutions on pressing health challenges. “We have had an amazing year,” says AMWHO Head Delegate Zainab Tafish. “The 8 members won 6 awards—multiple Best Delegate and Position Paper awards—at the Regional Conference at the University of Oklahoma, while 9 members won 3 awards at the International Conference at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.” Across the two conferences, Tafish herself earned Best NGO Representative and Best AFRO Delegate recognitions. She recommends AMWHO to anyone interested in health policy, advocacy and global health (Tafish herself is headed to medical school next fall after participating in AMHWHO for all 4 years as an undergraduate). For the coming year, AMWHO has its sights on competing internationally. The UH AMWHO delegation would like to attend the Global Model World Health organization Conference held by the actual WHO at the WHO Headquarters in Geneva.

Model United Nations (MUN)
UHMUN is a student-led organization that competes at top-tier national collegiate MUN conferences. Through diplomacy, debate, and collaborative problem-solving, MUN members build skills in leadership, public speaking, negotiation, and global awareness. Participants gain a deep understanding and appreciation of how different countries cooperate to put an end to world problems, such as eliminating famine, protecting human rights, preventing or ending armed conflicts, and many others. Over the past academic year, rotating teams proudly participated in the National MUN conference in Washington, DC (NMUN DC) in the fall and the University of Chicago’s MUN Conference (ChoMUN) in the spring. Over 30 students represented UH at these conferences; the teams earned multiple Outstanding Delegation awards. Secretary-General and Head Delegate Yug Patel is looking to the year ahead: “We’d like to have multiple team members earn Best Delegate awards, expand our participation in local and regional collegiate conferences, and strengthen our online presence through consistent and engaging social media content.
