Why did you choose the University of Houston?
I chose UH to stay close to my little brother, who I love and support with all of my heart, and my support group.
Please describe your experience as a UH Cougar.
My experience as a UH Cougar has had a few ups and downs. I came into it not knowing what to expect, and honestly being scared, especially living away from home for the first time ever. I learned how to be my own person, and act as an adult. The COVID-19 pandemic has made being a college student hard, especially due to the fact that my learning style is more in-person and hands on, however the support the school and my peers have given me through this past year have been beyond anything I ever expected. Being a UH Cougar to me personally has been an experience I can never and never want to forget. It's been like finding a home — a place I belong.
What are your goals post-graduation? How has your scholarship support helped you in this pursuit?
Post-graduation, I plan to either do computer science programming, security, or engineering. I have not yet decided. Receiving the Erik D. Richards Memorial Scholarship has helped immensely with financial insecurity, and also showed me that hard work pays off, and I cannot and should not take things for granted. Overall, receiving this scholarship has helped me to be able to flourish without worrying about paying for school, owing my parents, and being able to afford small everyday things.
What message would you like to pass along to the UH community?
Don't take things for granted. Sure, it's hard, but it's worth it. And remember, your mental health means more than your grades. It means your future, so take care of yourself, however that may look. Go Coogs!
